Have just gone through exactly the same thing with my 17 year old lad.
He passed on Monday and has a ‘08 1.6 Astra.
Best deal we got was £997 with Co-Op Young Driver insurance.
That’s fully comp, with him as the policyholder and main driver. Wife and I are named drivers.
It is with a black box though much to his disgust.
Cheapest quote without the box was £1500.
Blackbox was a killer for one of my kids. While he never was speeding or getting into trouble the data collected by the box for the short time he had it is haunting him years later. Even with a different insurance company they rate him higher because he never got rewards with the box but he was never penalized either. What little money we saved to have it added to his car in the first place has been eaten up and then some by the loss of it. We pulled it out after really looking into it ands its long term effects. Basically if your a new driver and can control yourself to the point where you absolutely know it will reward you its ok but if you screw up even a few times by driving in ways it doesnt like it will hurt you badly even years later. Truth be told i think im the one that caused him to get no rewards because i would drive it around every so often to check on its condition and it never occured to me that the box was watching. Out of guilt i do pay a bit of his current premium. I also know a mechanic took the car out for a transmission calibration and per bmw exceeded the recommended speedlimit by a lot and i think that is effecting him as well. Literally no other way to calibrate a cvt transmission other than excessive speeding. Cant explain that to the box though.
