Engine is making whirling noise, matches the Rev speeds. Sound like it's coming from the block, fan, belts etc are all okay and not touching. New water pump. Only thing haven't checked is alternator but it was new not so long ago. But it sounds like inside the block....we had an issue where one of the cam followers had worn away and was rattling so they have all been replaced.
Any ideas?

Use a long plastic screwdriver as a listening device. Place the tip onto the part Or area you want then place your ear on the other end

Take the fan belt off and give it a quick run, that will eliminate that end if it's still making the noise.

Hopefully this vid works. You can just here the noise on the video as it's revved. I'm aware of the tappet noise but the whirling noise is puzzling me.

Just sounds like normal fan noise to me.

But the fan does look a bit too far into the cowling.

Cheers guys. No obvious signs, a slight rumble from the screwdriver from the alternator but nothing obvious. Took the fan belt off and noise disappeared so it is either the belt, alternator or water pump

Check all the mounts for the alternator, had a strange noise a few years ago, turned out the bolt holding the adjuster bracket to the engine had broken and the bracket was moving around!

One thing to check is the lug on the engine front plate where the alternator bolts on. It has been known for that lug to fracture and cause a strange noise (had that). It can take a while to diagnose as it is not immediately obvious.

Sometimes a new fan belt or new-ish one that's been refitted on a different pulley or in the reverse direction to how it previously ran can make a sound like that. This usually settles down after about 100 miles.
