Evening everyone,

Got a bit of an issue with my 89' mini 30. It has a 1275 with points and a single carb (hs4). I use it as a daily.

The cars been running fantastic until about a week ago, where the battery started to get tired. So i went to halfords and got a new battery, and it started absolutely fine. Was running fine for about 5 minutes, and suddenly started backfiring quite badly. So i pulled over and stopped the engine to check that the choke wasn't stuck on. Everything looked normal, went to restart and it turned over absolutely fine but just would not start. After a few minutes it started up and was backfiring badly again, I was looking at the rev counter and it was bouncing up and down like crazy. After a while it cut out on its own and hasn't started since.

Since then i replaced the ignition coil because a lot of the symptoms pointed to that, however it didn't make a difference. Another thing to mention is the oil level was a bit over maximum for some reason... so i drained a bit out but wasn't too much over to cause an issue.

I'm lost for ideas now, it turns over fine but just will not start. I've got fuel coming into the float bowl.

Is there anything else I can check? I don't think the new battery would cause such an issue surely its a coincidence?

Any help is much appreciated as usual.

First off, how old is the fuel? Are the spark plugs wet with fuel?

After checking the plugs are wet and the points gap is set correctly I'd then try flammable liquid into the carb through the carb throat, it should start then die IF you have a spark and fuel

Sounds like points gap has closed or distributor is loose.

What you need is a good service - new plugs, check HT leads, check distributor cap, new rotor, new points and condensor. Check LT leads from coil to distributor etc. Clean carb float bowl and replace fuel filter.
