Apologies Graeme I thought it was a more general comment....best to eliminate the bypas hose anyway as most of us do

 

Its surprising that the bypass lasted so long in production, a pretty pointless awkward job

 

Maybe lasted as they got a lot of workshop time from it...like EGR valves, DPF's and dual mass flywheels today

Electronic ignition would be at the top of my list. I fitted a MegaJolt years ago and it's been 100% reliable so far. I actively seek out large puddles when I drive in the rain.

The basic requirement for improved performance in an A series is a better head.
As Nick says, unless the head, exhaust system and inlet system are improved there is little point in changing the cam.

You could just do the reliability mods like doing away with the by-pass hose and just enjoy the retro driving experience a standard 998 gives.
