Hi all.

Is there a kit to change my later model steering column to the earlier type. I’d like to move the iginition to the dash next to the lights. Is there and easy plug and play kit?

I'm sure wired by Wilson could make you a suitable kit

It might cost a small fortune as you might be drawn in to other products. I have to say that the work is top quality and is always tested before being shipped and any technical support which is only very occasionally needed but very quickly dealt with

if that is all you are wanting to achieve, then you can leave your Column that you have in place and remove the Ignition Switch / steering lock from it, then fit a MKI type Dash Ignition Switch.

However, before doing this, I'd have a chat with your friendly MOT man first. I don't know what the low down in the UK is on doing this modification, but here in Aust, all cars made from 1972 on must have a locking column as part of our Registration laws.

I found it's quite difficult to find a Mk1/2 column these days. Moving the ignition is straight forward - you will probably only need to shorten the wires and attach to the new switch. I made it more difficult for myself by adding a separate starter button. If you use the type of indicator stalk with the green light and steering wheel hornpush you need to make sure that the column and rack are earthed to the body and the indicator switch to the column.  I've had no problems yet with MOTs with my conversion.

Steering lock is an insurance and MOT issue. Steering lock info can be found on the MOT handbook web pages.
