I have fitted the 1275 type pressed steel rockers to my mg metro based 1275 engine is it worth welding the tops of the rockers where there is a slight gap?

..as mentioned, they're pretty robust as they are.  I've no idea how hard you'd need to be pushing them to warrant the additional stiffness the welds would give (..i imagine (i.e.guess!) it's done to minimise potential for 'bowing' of the two sides under max lift..)

If running a very aggressive cam high rate valve springs itcan be a good idea to run a line of weld across the rocker top surface to prevent the risk of spreading.

Unless you are racing or using it for other similar High Reving with huge Aggressive Cam Profiles, no, I wouldn't weld them up. They are quite stout and stronger than they appear. Even for Competition, many ran them as standard as welding only added weight and there was a risk of weakening them.

Despite their appearance, they are the best factory Rocker that was offered.

Be aware that there is Small Bore and Big Bore types. The difference being that the Small Bore types have a Round Rocker Pad / Tip and the Big Bore are Oval.
