I'm replacing the brake reservoir and the new one has come with a proper plug connection to the cap rather than two 180 deg opposed 6mm spades ... if that makes sense. I could easily just connect the existing 6mm female spade connectors into the new cap but I prefer to do repairs properly and would rather swap the spade connectors on the loom for the correct (updated?) plug. Does anyone know a suitable source for the plug?

New cap ...

I would also like to know how / why this incompatibility has come about.

I had a chat with Polevolt today, I've used them a lot in the past and they tell me there was originally a Lucas plug that fitted the later type cap but they no longer have it. They've given me a couple of other contacts to follow up though so all is not lost yet.

Failing that, yes a couple of 6.3mm terminals would fit.
