Hello, I would like to know what information my vin number will give me. What is the best way to decode it ? I would like to see what has changed over the years. Will ther vin tell me what the standard colour or optional extras my car came with? Currently a ‘72 998cc (some variation of metallic green)
Vin: XA2S1-N-XXXXXXA
TIA

A VIN on its own (or chassis number as it will be on a '72) won't give you the original colour, but you can use it to apply for a heritage certificate to find out how your car left the factory.

Don't know if heritage certificates are different now but I got one about 20 years ago for my '72 mini 1000 and all it states is build date and model.

What is on them depends on what info they hold - the quality of records kept by BMC & BL varied wildly over the years.

And if you're unlucky enough to own a much newer Mini the records kept by Rover were scrapped I believe!! Can't find anything about the build date etc of my 1990 car ☹️

XA2S1-N-XXXXXXA

Years built= Oct 1969-1974 (changed to XL2S1N sometime during 1974)

X= no significance

A= A series engine

2S= 2 door saloon

1= Round nose

N=1000cc

XXXXXX= numbers start from at 101 for this model

A= built at Longbridge

You should also have a Commission plate that reads N20S.

So it's not a Mk3 Cooper S if that's what you were hoping for.

The Vin won't tell you what extras were fitted but they consist of a -static or automatic front seatbelts, radial tyres, a heated rear window, & face level (eyeball) vents.

Metal Green wasn't available in 1971/72 so either it's had a respray.... or it's a later Mini with a fake identity.
