This is just for my education but here is a pic of the inside of the Bell Housing on an early MG Metro 1275 that I am stripping and rebuilding. What's the cause of the blackened oil grime on the inside?

Need to know for when I rebuild it?

The clean area is where I have wiped it out with some celly thinners.

Had similar on an old 998cc engine I picked up from eBay. Crankshaft oil seal needed replacing. The black oily grim is a mixture of engine oil and clutch dust.

I figured it was leaking oil in from somewhere :-)

It will get new oil seals all around anyway.
