I just got a set of 12" meteors that are in ok condition but could do with a respray. I am probably going to plastidip them for now while I figure out what to do with them.
Anyone got a rough cost to r and r the tires, strip the rims and recoat them? Just a ballpark is fine.

To get a top notch job get powder coated.

To get a decent enough job just sand sand and sand... more prep you do the better the finish.
Plenty folks out there will tell you that..

Couple nights sanding per wheel at least..
Nip to local spray booth suggesting next time they have a silver car in to paint that they flash over the wheels for you.. sure they will play ball with that.... especially if your leaving them with the booth....

But you could easy rattle can them to a decent spec herself....
You tube it..
Lots of thin coats allowing time to dry and at right temperature...

I did mine myself other than the blasting, which I was able to get for a good cash deal with the local blasters for £15 per wheel. I then spent ages checking for imperfections, filling, sanding and wiping down. I then used Halfrauds' finest primer, gloss paint (4 coats) and then lacquer (5 coats). I can speak for longevity and toughness as they've not been on the car (still a project) but they look lovely!

Freshly blasted

Tiny imperfections such as this were filled, sanded and wiped clean.

Primed in the summer sun..

A bit of gloss black...

...and fully lacquered.

Total cost was about £105  :gimme:  Incidentally, the blasters offered to powdercoat them as well as the blasting but that would have been an extra £275, which I didn't have.

A picture of the wheels condition would help to give a better guide to whats involved.

As above, preparation in the key and often the most expensive labour intensive part. I personally don`t like powder coat as if /when the finish gets damaged there is nothing you can do about it and I have seen way too many terrible jobs done due to zero prep and the metalics are too course also.

They need 2K priming and flatting before powder coat for top job so why not have a durable fixable 2K top coat that will not track corrosion under the finish when the skin is broken, wheels nuts, kerb damage, slipped with the spanner etc.

If you are on a tight budget a rattle can of etch primer and a 1L of tractor paint from your local farm supplies gives an excellent durable finish.

I have david brown orchid white tractor paint on my reverse rims for over a decade and they are still in great condition.

It works out at six quid a wheel including the etch primer plus blasting if they need it which should be plastic, glass or shell media and NOT iron oxide as the tiny parts left behind will give dissimilar metal corrosion and you will be worse off than when you started.

You may find a dip in caustic soda is all they need. A big plastic washing bowl a three quids worth of soda from the hardware store. It acts like paint stripper in the right doses .

Wear goggles, gloves and clothes you don`t like, its great stuff but nasty and will burn your skin and eyes with ease.

All great advise. Thanks guys

Rims will need to be stripped for sure. Lots of small areas of flaking paint which could be sanded but i would rather have it all taken off.
I am really leaning towards a bronze or copper finish on the rims so tractor paint may not have the selection i need but i will look into it.

Get the wheels stripped/blasted it'll give you a good finish for painting and save you hours of rubbing down and also gets into every nook and cranny

If you're after a bronze colour I painted these (not mini wheels) with a base gloss black and 3 coats of pearl powder mixed with 2k clear, then cleared over with more 2k.

Those rims look amazing, borderline sexual. In my mind that's the colour I want mine to be.

If you want the exact colour of paints and pearl powder I used just let me know and I'll look it up in my "Big Book of things I've painted" for you.

Those wheels above were on a VW Polo before it was written off by masonry falling from a building badly damaging the roof and bonnet and are 6x14 and 100pcd so no good for minis sadly. Pity as the wheels are currently sat in my garage gathering dust.

totally depends on what you want doing. i had some blasted and painted for 20 quid a wheel 20 years ago. but i did not ask for any repair to the rims. no diamond cut or anything other than the blast and paint.

had 2 coil springs blasted and powder coated last year for 20 quid a spring.
