The oil and filter change is a good place to start.
What year is the mini? For the later versions Rover recommended 10w 40 mineral oil.
There is quite a bit of info on the automatic mini website about oil for the automatic gearbox. Quite a few people recommend using oil that is suitable for motor cycles with wet clutches. This is oil with the specification JAPO MA2 and semi synthetic 10w40.
The gearbox does need very regular and frequent oil changes and if these have been neglected in the past this may be the cause of your problems. I hope so!

Should have added this to my previous post.
Do you know the correct way to check the oil level?
To check the level in your automatic transmission follow the info below..............
1) make sure vehicle is on a level surface
2) run the engine for 1 to 2 mins
3) stop and wait for 1 min
4) then check the dipstick
