Hi all,

 

just getting around to replacing the inner and outer sills on my mini - ive brought the inner sills from mini spares, to me it looks like they need to be placed over the top of the cross member? 

 

is that correct, does any one have any pictures of how they have fitted these panels, have you overlapped it with the floor or cut flush - i might be being naive but i cant work out how to have it flush. it also looks as if the panel doesn't marry up with the door step very well, though easily fixed has anyone else seen this with these panels.

If your using this panel, then it's designed to fit internally and be weld over the top which is a bodge. You can probably cut out the rot and make it fit and do a bit of a better job of it. The pinned section on over sills might help you out on the proper way of repairing these sections.

Most would recommend using the sill to first flute panels from m machine when replacing these parts. They also do one with the outer sill already fitted which may make the job quicker.

thanks, ive binned these two panels, they are indeed the ones from mini spares, i had assumed thats all that were availiable when i read "Only made as an after market replacement as no genuine part was ever available seperately. Best one on the market it has the cut out for the crossmember and is our best selling panel."

These panels are a dreadful bodge and should not be sold. They leave the shell dangerously weak around the crossmember ends, and do not comply with the MOT rules about welded repairs because they cannot be either spot welded like the originals or butt welded to part of the original panel. Therefore they are illegal on the road. They would only pass MOT if the tester did not know the Mini and could not see the bodge. You did well to bin them.

 

An actual inner sill can be made from a sheet of 0.9mm steel if you have access to a folder. Many small engineering companies could do the fold for you, or it could be improvised. The lower edge needs to be butt welded to the remaining floor and spot or plug welded to the outer sill. You do need to have the outer sill, jacking point and slinging brackets off to be able to fit the new inner sill. Don't forget the reinforcing plate for the seatbelt mount.

 

Or you can buy a replacement for the outer edge of the floor. See below, item 6

If doing inner & outer sills the best option is the combined sub-assembly from M-Machine. It just makes the job so simple and accurate. All the welds are correct and new jacking points are incorporated.
