I've managed to use a crow bar threaded between 2 wheel studs, and the ground. You do run the risk of damaging the studs though.
I've also done that - but just put a couple of old wheel nuts onto the studs to protect the threads and let the bar rest against them.
I'm more scared of grinders than standing on a bar. Many ways to skin the cat!

Thanks for all the advice.
Put the wheel back on, chocked it with bricks and put some weight on it.
After half an hour or so of sweating, grunting and pushing down hard I got it off.
I now have a complete understanding of what childbirth must be like.
