To get this straight.

First gear works OK ?

Second gear works OK ?  ............. (as do 3rd 7 4th)

But wheels lock when changing up from 1st to 2nd

Do the wheels lock when changing down from 2nd to 1st ?

What type of gearbox do you have (Rod or Remote. If Rod, what's the Case Number?) and what's it's history?

How long has it been doing this for?

If the balk ring on first jammed onto the first gear selecting second would lock the gearbox in two gears at once. I assume the lock up only happens for a split second as the force breaks the balk ring from the gear. Try starting off in second and than third and forth. It will probably also change down ok from second to first.

I have come across something similar once.

It was quite a while back, but thinking it through a bit, I think the 3rd / 4th Gear is assembled back to front.

The other thing it could be is a crack case, on the centre web, above the Main Bearing.

Regardless, the engine will need to come out and the gearbox off.

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking the engine/gbox out and try and see what's happening.

When I rebuilt my rod change box it would seize up when I tried to select gears as well. Turned out the baulk rings were seizing up so it could well be that. Good luck!
