With the engine out thought it an idea to swap the clutch. On inspection the last owners made a real mess with it. Broken thd flywheel end cover - overtightened 3 bolts by look of it. So i need a new cover. Next theyve damaged the bolt with washer attached (verto clutch) thats an easy one. However ipon removing the clutch and flywheel it seems the tapered end of the crankshaft has been hacked by a screw driver or something. Ive no idea.

Anyone know if this taper end comes off and can you get a replacement or is it part of the crank ?

Thanks

It's part ofvthe crank shaft. I think if the damage is very minor you can relap the taper but I'm no expert. I think you'd need to post pics to let those in the know take a look.

As above some pics would be good. There is slot in the crank for the 'c' washer that retains the primary gear, but I'm guessing that not what you're referring to, as it's obviously machined.

Look on the bright side.

Despite what an earlier owner has done to your crank, it was working OK.

You can do very little harm, and a bit of good by lapping the flywheel onto the crank using fine valve paste.

To do this, drain the oil, and using suitable blocks, stand the engine on its water-pump and spin the flywheel on the crank by hand.

You can still upload images and link to them.

Or find someone who knows about Minis to have a look . But lapping the flywheel to the crank is a good idea to remove raised surfaces from both.
