Hi, I have recently bought a 1997 mini cooper and when i picked it up it had a full tank of petrol but the fuel gauge needle bounced around alot on the way back home (46 miles) now reads zero. So is it likely to be the sender unit or could it be an electrical problem?

thanks in advance

Chris

If the coolant temperature gauge is working correctly, then it's likely to be the sender.

Although it appears to be working, you can test the gauge by taking the wires off of the sender on the tank, and shorting them. The gauge should read full. If it doesn't, earth the green wire to somewhere else. If it now reads full, the earth point is dodgy.

You can buy the floats separately, if you find it holed. I'd also buy a new gasket.
