Which Inner Panel Do I Need?

Best Answer Mito , 22 January 2019 - 07:41 PM

They're two separate panels and it looks like you need to replace both. The check panel is thicker and really puts the strength back required for the doors. The other panel is the same thickness as the majority of the panels and isn't enough on it's own to mount the doors to.

The a panel wraps around the edge of the inner wing ( flitch repair in this case) and should also be welded to it. So you'll definitely need an a panel as well. Go to the full post

While working on my Mini, the corrosion that I found on the inner panel surrounding the hinge mounts was running top to bottom. Here are some pictures:

The embedded screwdriver is just to indicate the extent, as well as the repair made by the previous owner.

I've found the relevant panels on minispares but I'm not sure whether I need the one with the hole for the air hose.

I've booked the services of a welder who will be here at the end of the week, I just need to know which one I should buy and ask him to attach.

EDIT: Looks like I messed up the links, they should work now.

It's looking a bit crusty around the vent, so I'd go for the one with the vent hole.

It's probably worthwhile checking the shock absorber mounts and the rest of the inner wing for rust just to be on the safe side. It could end up turning into a much bigger job though, so you may not want to poke around

It looks like you'll need the door check panel as well. It doesn't look like there's much left of the original.

I didn't know about the check panel, I assumed as the other panels have the holes for the hinge bolts I needed one of them?

Said welder had already fixed both of the front shock absorber mounting points (barely visible at the top right in the first picture) and I bought a pair of new mounts as the original ones (and the points they were attached to) had rusted away. It was actually the poking around that I did as a result of the shock absorber mounts that led me to this! :D

I'll probably need to remove the original a-panel for access, which is a shame as it's in far better shape than underneath, the nuts holding the upper hinge are proving to be surprisingly difficult to grip on to, moreso than the lower ones.

Should I get the "upgrade" A panel, based on the product description?

Apart from the price, is there any difference in quality between the genuine and non-genuine panels?

With A panels they are all pretty much alike. And as Mito has said you will need the inner A post as well judging by your pictures.

I've ordered the three panels, as well as some subframe mounting bits, should take a couple of days.
