Having done some searching, I can't find an answer to this.

I'm in the process of doing a full MPI conversion into Pootle (my 85 city E) including the full MPI wiring loom. I am retaining the centre speedo and the smiths dials I have run for the past 16 years. Water temp, oil pressure and the warning lights seem easy enough, but how is rev counter wired in?

The rev counter is a 80mm smiths (same as this

https://www.minispor...ome-black.html

which I bought new 16 years ago and was last running on late electric ignition dizzy set up) with a number of switches at the back. The OEM feed wire (with the bullet connector?) will provide the feed, but what configuration of the switches do I need? I've seen the conversion used in the past, so I assume they weren't there just for looks and it can be set up right

Cheers in advance

Craig

Yes that is correct but you need a rev counter that reads 2 cylinders and not 4 as the mpi ignition system is a “ wasted spark “ if you put a rev counter for a four cylinder car it will not work

My experience others may say otherwise

Done some more digging, and I have a Smiths RCV1004-00CA rev counter, which is semi programmable and has 6 switches.

I've found the instructions for it here

https://www.caigauge.../pil019-367.pdf

previously, for my old carb'd engine with a lucas electronic ignition i had then set

1=off

2=off

3=on

4=off

5=on

6=off

So following the instructions, I went for

1=off

2=off

3=on

4=on

5=on

6=off

I fire up with it all connected today and at tickover it hardly moves (100rmp or so), but does rise with the rev's

Any thoughts

according to the wiring diagramm you have to connect to C159-25 from ecu, then I would try old and new switch settings

What you need is one of these

Connect the two coil wires WS and WB to the two inputs of the modual the the output goes to the tacho

Ended up getting a new Rev counter from rally designs (only £60, much cheaper than a smiths one, but doesn’t look as good sadly) that would run in 2 cylinders configuration
