They bodged up two Minis over the years. The first was a real bodge-job and on the second they wrapped it in vinyl and trapped all the rust in.

I do remember that, but I have to say that I have also done a 1/2 A-panel in the past when the rest of it was perfect and there was just some rust at the bottom. That was on a Mk.1 which was very rust free with otherwise excellent paintwork. I cut the outer just above the lower hinge, joggled the edge of the replacement panel to suit the old panel, welded it all in, gave it a couple of coats of high-build spray putty and it was fine. The lower hinge fitting was fine and needed no work.
I thought it was a 'proper' repair just like any other 'patch repair'. However, I would normally change the entire A-panel as they are usually very rusty including the door supports on the inner wings.
That Mini on Wheeler Dealers even had its boot lid handle fitted 90 degrees out. It was vertical.

I remember bidding on the Vinyl wrapped mini back in the day, or at least my lad did, we ended up being filmed making the bid and thankfully was outbid as there were some corners that were not necessarily taken in the right manner with it.
Doesn't look to have aged well in the photo from 2015
