For many years ive had an Automatic Mini based trike project in my garage.

Over the past 2 months ive built it up from a bare frame and a pile of bits into a rolling project and i even had the 998cc engine running at Christmas.

Im now tidying my garage and i can hardly push the thing about its in neutral has no brakes fitted and all the tyres are blown up.

Are all autos like this in neutral or do i have a problem with the transmission ?

I need an auto due to a left leg disability.

Many thanks JohnPaul

This afternoon i jacked the rear wheels off the ground and in every gear the ns wheel was very very stiff to turn and the os wheel turned but it wasnt easy to do so.

The rear wheels aren’t connected to the power unit so you probably have a brake stuck on

Trike project, so I guess rear engined?

If you had both wheels in the air at the same time, this would indicate it being something other than the gearbox, ie, a dragging brake or rubbing drive shaft, maybe even a crook bearing.

ive changed the engine oil as it was like a white gloopy syrup.

Im thinking the engine was parked up in gear and the gearbox is stuck in a gear and moving the selector isnt doing anything as a valve or plunger is seized.

Any ideas anyone?

I do have another automatic engine but it uses the earlier hardy spicer driveshafts and i dont know if i can swap them over by swaping the diff housing ?

Cheers JohnPaul

If you've got a wheel off the ground the diff should allow it to turn freely, while also rotating the crown wheel and in drive parts of the gearbox - though probably not on an auto that isn't running to produce enough oil pressure to operate clutches and brake bands.

With both wheels airborne, turning one will cause the other to counter rotate with the crown wheel etc stationary - That's where I'd start.

Ive had a couple of hours in my garage on Good Friday and have removed the sub frame and the engine to swap the motor with the one i have as a spare .

It looks like the ns wheel bearing is seized/collapsed so im going to replace that and start again it will be easier than swapping the diffs and engines  but as i have a damaged lower spine , a gammy left leg it may take a while.

Cheers JohnPaul.

Ive been busy, and the engine and subframe are all refitted with the driveshafts.

The starter motor was a casualty when the subframe fell off the axle stands but i have a spare when i can find it.

The trike now pushes about very easily now so i call that a result.

I hope to get it running over the bank holiday weekend and drag it outside to take some pictures.

Cheers JohnPaul.
