Just bought a Jap import Anniversary 35LE.
I’m buying correct Minilites for the marque and like the look of them with black centres but Jap cars were all silver.
It’s already got the 4 spots/fogs on the front and they were only standard on the 200 UK 35LEs not on Jap cars.

Where do you start and stop with “Originality”
(Also got a side exit RC40 and am not sure about that either)

I think you can spend a lot of time chasing down that elusive rivet or nut cover.

 

Some people get great satisfaction from that, and I must admit, I used to, but I found myself 'wasting' a lot of valuable time in the process rather than just enjoying the vehicles.

 

I do still keep an eye out for 'stuff' and get a buzz from finding it, but often agonize over fitting it as it's no longer 'new' once that's done, but it is nice to have a complete original car.

 

It's all too easy though, to invest money in a model that won't realise that financial investment, but if you are doing it for your own satisfaction, then go for it.

 

Also, you often need to filter some comments as there are always going to be knockers.

Who cares its your car, no need to conform to what some sad 'anorak' says at a show. Ask to see their car (if they have one) and find something on theirs to put right! There really are more important things in life to worry about......

According to a report, at an air show someone criticised him for painting it red, rather than in standard camoflage. He asked what colour they had painted their Spitfire. yep they will but if you know the difference you can tell them to.

Only ever raced VWs ... Drag and off road but some very fast innocent looking road beetles out there.
Son Scott and me did a COMPLETE strip down nut and bolt restoration on a Ford Escort RS Turbo, bought for £16k and about same again spent on it ... ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING , metallic decals, paper stickers, finish on hardware, all NOS parts when we could find them , £6k original mix repaint bare shell everything off etc, etc.
Guy came up to us at Ford RS show and told us paint finish was too shiny !
You know though, he was absolutely correct .... Ford paint finish back then was thin and lacked depth .... We decided not to pay a lot of money for a ******* finish ... LOL

On the other hand everybody loved the RS500 in completely original with slightly worn paint condition. Paint finish under its bonnet was so thin it was worn almost bare where previous owners had been leaning on it ?

Hi Fastorq,

Totally up to you what you what you do and how you do it on your Mini. Originality doesn’t always mean its worth more, depends on the buyer. JDM cars are for the moment seen as less valuable and probably less ‘original’, folks seem to want UK versions more, but I dare say that will change as JDM cars seem to fair better with age.

Sounds like you’ve done some research already into C35s and if you haven’t already the Cooper 35 Register on Facebook is a great group to join. Lots of info and help there and a lot of the members, like me have JDM cars. Also the JDM Classic Mini Owners Club UK on FB too.

4 lamps was standard on the green C35LE even in Japan, 4 of the same lamps though, rather than 2x fog and 2x driving lamps that the UK spec had.

I would imagine that most minis nowadays would have an RC40 or otherwise non standard exhaust, especially coming out of Japan.

Just had a closer look All 4 lamps are the same.
(I can cross that off my list) .... lol

It’s your car, do with it as you please. You can always keep the standard parts to put back on if you ever decide to sell.

Great to see people encouraging modifications, too many purists out there in the classic car world, mini's were made to be played with, drive it, modify it and enjoy it

If it pleases others, then that's a bonus, but I wouldn't make that the focus.
