Hi All.

 

I know I've successfully towed a mini before using an A frame, but obviously that knowledge escaped my tiny brain at the weekend and in moving my car to a temporary secret location (just down the road from my house) whilst building work happens I managed to shred a tyre.......It was only 40 years old too and would have lasted another 40...ha ha!!!!!!

 

Legalities aside (we all do daft stuff don't we!????), where is the best place to mount an A frame to on a classic mini?  My style of frame has a solid pin and chain rather than a swivel type newer version.

legalities aside (if wheels are on the ground in needs to have working brakes and be taxed/tested etc) people have used the peardrop to subframe bolts changed out to some suitable device. and I have seen things clamped to the tie bars.

Being a 68, it's both Tax and MOT exempt so not sure how that bit works....the fact the hydroelastic on one side is fully collapsed, it's got no floor, and the tyres are bald would probably raise the eyebrows of PC plod more i'd think       .

 

Luckily it wasn't me driving.....

 

Maybe in the past I've wrapped the chain around the front of the tie bar area....so long ago since I've used the A frame I can't remember.

Probably best going with the tie bar option. I've a natty set up with trailer tailgate hinges drilled to replace the teardrops, I know it's not exactly an option if you don't have teardrop mountings.

An M8 version would only be a few quid.

Also with it being mot exempt it should still be in a road worthy state and be able to pass an mot to use it on the highway or tow it with any of the 4 wheels on the ground..

But in answer to your question i thought it would be round the tie bar as most cars use the lower wishbone don't they? but I've seen tie bars bend pretty easy too....

Don't worry, I'm well aware I was being slightly iffy with it's road worthiness and I should not have towed it. I had little choice though unfortunately and had I not been under time constraints I would have made sure it was done properly on a trailer.....but we do do daft things every now and then!!!!!!

 

Tie bars are probably the best solution as a locating point.....or as mentioned above, pickup the front subframe mounts somehow.
