Hi all I’ve finally got my first panel all welded in today, it was the inner flitch panel the one with the vent hole in, I’ve seam welded and plug welded it on, it fits lovely and is solid however I’ve dressed it up abit not wanting to remove too much of the welds but it looks terrible!!!! I know it’s underneath but I want it to look nice, what can I do, shall I grind them back more, my thoughts where to grind them back and add a light scum of filler just to tart it up but it just seems wrong, could I put a thin film of seam sealer over the whole area maybe? Any advice welcome ?

If they look that bad then it suggests something is wrong with the weld. Can you post a picture?

Use Imgur to post pictures on here. The welds if they have fully penetrated can be knocked back flush but be careful not to go too far.

Now when i knock back welds i use a flapper disc or grinder followed by coarse and fine roloc discs. Those i use in my high speed pneumatic die grinder.

Most of those welds i see there can be carefully knocked back a lot more but you need to target the raised welds only. Be patient its doable.

We all have to start somewhere. The biggest thing with any weld is its penetration. If you full penetration then knocking back flat on the side you can see will be fine, just be careful like i said to target the weld only. If the metal burns ie darkens then its thin.

Ok thanks mate, I did seem to get good penitration on the seam welds, on the plug welds on the stiffener bit I did up the power and wire speed, the back defiantly had penitration as i could see it glowing through so hopefully its enough

Once I’ve knocked them back more would you suggest a thin layer of body filler just to smooth it out a little I will obviously seam seal the welds and Gravitex the lot once finished

Try a grinding disc end on to the weld to take the weld down without taking away any meat of the metal either side of the weld then a flap disc to smooth it out slow and steady with it

Depending on what sort of finish you are looking for a very light skim of filler would not hurt and then seam seal and Gravitex or Raptor.

If you want a show finish then the more work you do with the welds the better, meaning less filler work if any.
