Hi all, I have chased my tail so much with the mini that I am getting no where. Is there anyone in the area that come and show me what I am doing wrong.

I seem to have fuel (the bowl is 1/3 full). The plugs are getting wet. The plugs spark. I have set the static timing as per the instructions and have moved the distributor around either side of the correct position and nothing changes. I have thrown easy start into the carb mouth but nothing. I have dropped some fuel into the carb body but nothing.

I changed the plugs and the car chugged for a few seconds and then died. I have no idea where to turn next.

I recently replaced the main jet on the carb. Should I strip down and see if that is seated ok? Run a compression test? Is there any test I could do for an air leak on the manifold or in the carb?

If there is someone local who can point me in the right direction. Many cups of tea and much gratitude await...

do this for me -

just swap the sparkplug side of the leads - one & four , two & three

see if it starts

sounds like you are 180 out on the timing , ie 1 is 4 & 2 is 3,

or the fuel is no good

edit - didn't see the bit about it running a bit

can you give the exact spec of the car - age injection / carb , cc , modifications etc

does it run on the starter , but not as soon as it is released ? - if so run a wire to +ve 12v batt to coil +ve

if it runs then coil + feed may be faulty

Cant't help directly but if you continue to struggle, Paul Higgs in New Forest is a nice chap and mini specialist

It turns over but does not fire up. It’s a 1275 South African mini. Hs4 carb on maniflow exhaust and mini spares inlet. Petronix timing. New ht leads, plugs. New su mechanical fuel pump.

In terms of testing the coil. If I have 3.3 ohms across the positive and negative of the coil terminals - is this right or should it read 3.5?

Can I just run a 12v positive to the positive feed and turn the engine over to test?

What other tests are their for the coil? It’s about the only thing I haven’t changed yet....

I chased the fault; it was rust in the fuel tank. It would occcasionaly let a bit of fuel through and then stop and would not start unless I shook the car a bit. New tank in over the weekend and we are up and running.

2 new questions; 1 even with the idle screw wound right out, I idle at 1200 rpm. I will double check the accelerator cable again but I am certain there is a bit of slack. What would cause this and what would the solution be?

Second question, I have a misfire if I try the accelerate with a bit of enthusiasm; it feels like it’s spitting back into the carb. Is this likely to be a timing issue that I can sort out when my new timing lights arrive. It’s timed from the static set up only at the moment as my timing light seems to have died.

Possibly an air leak - hose off or cracked , or leak around carb or manifold & gaskets

will cause faster idle & possibly a missfire due to weaker mix

there is usually a choke fast idle screw - check that isn't wound in too tight

it can cause faster idle even without choke out

all of the above is a guess

best of luck
