Hi

MPI engine and gearbox I'm rebuilding.

I'd like to chase threads out etc and drill block for the extra two fixings (head is done)

What are good quality taps and the best place to buy and which do I need.

5/16 UNF,UNC
3/8 UNF, UNC
1/4
?

Any recommendations for a good metal drill bit set which has imperial and metric for this and other general workshop use?

Thank you

If you are only cleaning up threads and some critical, as you are asking about, rather than a Tap, I'd recommend Thread Chasers. These will clean and to some extent 'correct' existing threads, but won't cut a new one.

It's all to easy to add wear to existing threads running a tap through them, especially in the Aluminum of the gearbox casing.

Sizes you'll want would be;-

1/4" UNF

1/4" UNC (though there's only 3 of these in the gearbox, you may well not need it if on a budget)

5/16" UNF

5/16" UNC

3/8" UNC

7/16" UNF

Though I'm not 100% familiar with the MPI Blocks, so I may have missed something unique to them.
