I have a 1974 Mini 1000 and the previous owner fitted rear seat belts. I wish to make this car as original as possible and as the car did not come with this can I legally remove the seat belts in the rear?

I am unsure on legality with young children in the rear of cars without rear belts, so maybe they were fitted for that reason, worth checking if you have children before removing them,

Seat Belts and the Law. In 1983, front seat belt wearing regulations for drivers and passengers (both adult and children) came into force. In 1989, wearing rear seat belts became compulsory for children under 14.

From the gov.uk website:

When a child can travel without a car seat

A child aged 3 or older can travel in a back seat without a child car seat and without a seat belt if the vehicle doesn’t have one.

In most cases, children under 3 must always be in a child car seat.

and:

If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts

If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts, for example it’s a classic car, you aren’t allowed to carry any children under 3 years old in it.

Children over 3 are only allowed to sit in the back seats.

These rules only apply if your vehicle was originally made without seat belts.
