OK so another post regarding my potential Metro 1275 - 1293 refurb.

On my shopping list I have a Minispares lightened Flywheel at £133.82, but could I get a machine shop to lighten my own Flywheel and save some money?

 

Seems to be a few people on here planning or doing 1275's at the mo

sure but thy need to know what they are doing and know how much is safe to remove before you get to a state where it can grenade. standard flywheels are cast iron. good lightened ones are steel. same goes for the backplate you want steel.

 

Vizard has the "safe" info in his books.

The Mini Spares lightweight flywheel is really for competition.

For road use, it is easy to lighten the standard Verto flywheel, which you probably have. The MS lightweight version is for the pre-Verto flywheel/clutch.

0.040" is the biggest my lathe can take and be safe.

Nice video. If nothing Else is changed on an engine what is the effect of a lighter flywheel on the torque? Does the peak move Up the rev Range?

Torque is basically determined by the head and cam design. A lighter flywheel will not alter the torque produced. However, a lighter flywheel will reduce the rotational stored energy (basically mass x rotational velocity) making the tick-over less smooth and the engine easier to stall when pulling away from rest.

However, acceleration will be improved as less available power is being used to accelerate the flywheel.

I have the yellow bible but cannot find any specifics on the Flywheel apart from pg 382/383 which talks about the theory and give the formulae for calculating how much equivalent simulated weight would be removed from the car with every 1lb of weight removed from the Flywheel. I was expecting details of what to remove and from where?

Anyway, when you say you do a lot, do you mean cast iron ones? Is the Metro Flywheel Cast Iron and is it safe to lighten cast iron flywheels?

it is safe if you know what you are doing like AC does. it is the people who dont know what they are doing that cause problems.

it is safe if you know what you are doing like AC does. it is the people who dont know what they are doing that cause problems.
