Hello - thanks for all the help i've gotten in this forum.

My mini ('65 countryman, 850 original engine) makes a sort of whining / grinding sound when i start it - not always, but sometimes. It usually stops when the car turns over, but not always. i could swear i smell the smell of metal on metal grinding in the air too. It happens more often when the car hasn't been started in the cold for a bit.

Here is a video of the issue. any help is appreciated!

That’s your starter motor sticking in the engaged position. Not good for it, seen them catch fire from over speeding when the engine is running.

Any decent starter/alternator place will be able to look at it

Sounds like you need a starter rebuild, it may be easier to just fit a new or reconditioned unit. They really are simple to work on but best to leave refurbishment to the experts

Thanks everyone!! i dont mind putting a new starter in, as opposed to a rebuild. Thanks for all the help!

Late to the game, but...

With the old inertia starters, don't discount the ignition switch or relay sticking, keeping the power on.

Quick check is to monitor the voltage across the battery terminals, should drop as the starter motor runs, and jump back up as the current is cut.  Will stay low if the juice is left on.
