Was pondering (just before I do a bit of work in the garage) what would be the fastest, most badass, reliable unmodified car for £10k. Cayman S maybe?

Any T6 Volvo, saloon or estate - amazing value for a reliable 300+bhp

I had a Jaguar XK (4.2 V8) which I paid £9500 for, with lots of miles on the clock. Lot of car for the money and lovely drive.

BMW 640i for another V8 alternative to the jag (I like V8's!)

Early Cayman or a Boxster if you want small/nimble. The odd water cooled 911 (996 model) for that money too.

Golf GTI for all round practicality/performance (or Skoda/Seat equivalent).

Impreza Turbo - decent ones for 10k that haven't been messed about with.

10k buys you a lot of car!

Evo's are much faster and still available under 10k

Personal thing but I just prefer Subaru’s they have something more quirky about them although technically not as sophisticated as the evos. Maybe the boxer engines or the sometimes odd styling.

My 10k would go on a 996 911 carrera 2 manual to replace my Boxster or if I was feeling particularly insane a tvr chimera

I'd also argue that you could find a fairly solid and reliable WRX for £10k, whereas a £10k Evo could be a bit ropey and more of a money pit?

People having a downer on the 996 Carrera and fears over bearing failures mean you really can get a nice one for £10/£12k. When I was working overseas on the opposite shift to my brother we went halves on a 996 C2 Manual to use while we were both home at different times. A lot of fun for £6k each. We did brakes, tyres and a couple of oil changes in 2 years then sold it for exactly what we paid for it.

Would be a bold move. Having had three Alfa's I know the ups and downs! Id say the front wheel drive in a 156 wagon is a long way away from the fun you get from other cars mentioned above - even when the V6 is performing as it should.

I've had about a dozen modern Alfas and 4 classics, so know their foibles and none have been unreliable except for suspension bush wear on the 147/156 platforms, but the 156 is one of the best FWD cars out there

when set up with poybushes all over  and why be a sheep and follow the herd.   :proud:

Also reliability is required, which puts the Evo and certainly an Alfa out of the running.
