I've cleaned the plate up and decided to paint it, it's currently in primer.

I then thought, bugger, probably should have bare metal inside the gasket line really.

Shall I outline the gasket and wire wheel the paint off inside this area or just leave it now it's on?

there is not much of the plate that is not covered by the block or the chain cover. but I an not a great fan of paint inside the engine. (except for maybe on the cast block surface with a suitable paint type).

I saw how much is exposed from the rust that I'd cleaned off, that area definitely needs paint.  Like you I think that paint inside the engine areas doesn't quite seem right but don't want to remove it unless I have to.

I'd rather remove it than it end up going around blocking oil ways

I used to paint them when the engine was assembled, so that the paint wouldn't end up where it shouldn't be however, not all outside parts of it can be painted, ie, the inner lower part near the half moon seal and up near the Cam Bearing, so I was never too happy with them.

A few years ago, I started having them Electroplated in a 'yellow' zinc finish. They come up looking good and stay that way while protected from rusting.

One I did late last year, here the Front Engine Plate and the Timing cover have been done, along with many other engine fittings
