It seems as though 998s are going for peanuts atm - worth buying some for salvageable parts in gearboxes and covers etc? presumably everyone is trading up to 1275 - hence the value of those has risen sharply.

I am seriously contemplating changing my 998 for a 1275.

I haven't started looking yet though.

What price are 1275's going for?

be very weary of purchasing any engine without knowing mileage or if the gearbox has problems most are 2nd-3rd syncro problems

Used to buy whole metros for 30 quid and squirrelled away enough engines / boxes to keep me going for a lifetime!! Anything now is a, unless you're really lucky, a rebuild candidate.... 998s are ridiculously cheap by comparison to 1275s... And can with careful build up provide equivalent power as a stock large bore with different characteristics... So absolutely yes - if you can hoover the odd one up for peanuts do it... Saves them from scrap and can donate many parts....

Besides very often if someone has an engine going spare they'll have other goodies too... Engage the chat
& charm...and take spare readies....
I've scrounged some superb stuff from the odd incidental purchase...

^^ this, I've bought motd metros for less than 100 quid for daily runners in the dim and distant... These days your looking at 500 quid for a 1275 that will probably need a rebuild... Daft...
