I've just put my engine back in after a rebuild. But now can't get the thing started. After ages of trying different things I discovered it's only sparking on 2 and 4. I have a 59d dizzy with points. I've only recently replaced the cap, leads, points and condencer before the rebuild. Any idea?

Try temporarily swapping the leads over (e.g 1 with 2, 3 with 4), see if the spark "moves" with the leads. This should help to narrow down the cause.

I tried a whole different set of leads with the same result.
Am I right in thinking either the points work or they don't, not just on position 2 and 4.

So if you swap leads 1 & 2 around (on the spark plug or the dizzy end, not both), the spark is still on 2? Was it running okay with the new cap, condenser etc. before the rebuild?

Spin the engine over and check the points are opening on all the lobes, have a look for play on the shaft while your there. How are you checking for spark ? lead to the block or a plug earthed on the head? Its unusual to not spark on 2 when the other 2 are ok. Visually check everything again it should be something obvious.

Make sure all the leads are pushed in to the dizzy cap and the contact part is not too small

Its worth checking the rotor arm contacts in the cap may not be central

Did you gap the plugs at 0.025 " and make sure the cap end of each plug is tight on the threads

Engine and battery earth good ?

King lead contact in dizzy cap OK ?

Have you got a lucas type quality condensor ? other types are pretty useless with about 1/2 the wire inside

Just to let you know all is good and fired up 1st time. It was me being stupid, in my haste I didn't gap the points properly. I knew it had to be something small.
