All  up and running.  to be honest not sure what the problem was.  fuel was not filling the float chamber.  I didn't find anything stuck in the fuel inlet or any of the jets or needles.  Ran around for half an hour at various speeds, obviously running in so not at big rpm#s.  all running great.  thanks for the help.  Still have the rattle when the clutch is up, which sounds horrible but nothing has broken?  Also need to get the exhaust off of the underside of the car.  there is a horrible drone when decelerating which I think is the exhaust touching the underside of the car.

So my fuel issue is back. Started car it ran at high rpm for 3 seconds and then died and simply wouldnt start again. pulled the fuel pipe off at the carb put a pot under it and fuel is filling the pot. took the carb off and it seems like the float chamber is empty?? Does the float chamber valve need a certain amount of pressure to open it? I don't think so I think it opens under gravity and is shut by the float? On taking the carb off I held it up the right way and tried to see if the valve was open. Its all brand new so it shouldn't stick. its very frustrating as I cannot find anything obvious. I have a glass fuel presssure filter and regulator, perhaps I should open up the pressure on that a little. Trouble is I don't know when or why this fault is going to occure again. Is there a way to test the valve with the carb off the car apart from visually? any help appreciated

So after the second dismantling of the carb it works again.  Drove 50 miles.  adjusted mixture and idle a couple of times.  This time however I didn't plug up the pipe that goes to the crank breather.  Its just resting in the open on the left of the engine.  Is that a problem?  Will it make the engine run lean?  Previously I had the end of the pipe plugged with a bolt but I wondered if that is what is stopping the float chamber from filling correctly.

can we have a picture of this hose? where it attaches to the carb.

yes if it or the port on the inlet are open to the atmosphere the setting will always be lean as you are adding unmetered air.

Here is a picture the blue pipe is the breather the left hand braided the fuel overflow. The braided with red markings is the fuel pipe.

I had a bolt in the end of the breather pipe to block it off. But now think that might weaken the mixture. I was worried that it was causing the problem with the carb not filling properly

blocking it off is fine or it should be connected to the crank case breathers. it has nothing to do with the fuel side.

my main issue is with the point where the dizzy Vac advance would be connected it looks like it has been snapped off and my not have been closed off. inspect the "hole" where the red mark is.

coming back to this thread because I'm having the same issue as before. by the way the hole in the previous picture is blocked so that's not an issue. The breather pipe (blue) in the picture is blocked off. There is plenty of fuel coming out of the end of the fuel pipe. The other pipe which I believe is the float chamber overflow is open to the atmosphere.

The issue is this. The car runs fine but sometimes if I leave it for any length of time it starts and runs until the float bowl is empty and then just stops and won't start again. the only fix is to take the carb off the engine remove the bottom of the float chamber. Put it all back together again and it works fine for some time. Then suddenly it won't work again. I'm sure its something to do with the float needle. The problem is it all works fine with the carb off the car.????????

Its an HIF 44 which has been vizarded. Completely stumped to be honest. HELP

I'd suggest replacing the float too.

Also, I see you did say the overflow (vent) from the float bowl was clear, but maybe have a real good close look at it as if that's blocked it will do just what you are seeing. I had one that took me a few days to sort, turned out an insect laid some eggs in this vent !

I replaced the float and the valve before. I took it apart tonight and the vitron valve looks perfect. the little filter is clean. No blockages anywhere. On the fuel bowl vent I just have a bit of fuel pipe that runs across the engine bay. I don't think its blocked but I'll take a look and check. May replace it with some clear tubing so its easier to check. The fuel pump is pumping the fuel regulator/filter is fine. There is certainly fuel at the side of the float chamber so the issue seems to be in the carb itself somewhere.

So having replaced the float etc with new ones I've also placed a non return valve in the line and replaced all the fuel line etc. I've also replaced the float chamber overflow with a new bit of pipe and put some copper brake pipe in the end to make sure it doesn't close off. After a bit of churning, presumably the float bowl filling she started up. Now she seems to run with no problems. But I will see what happens when a couple of days of non use go by.
