Hi, I am putting back together a 1989 mini Mayfair which I didn’t take apart and had not seen running. Put in new wiring loom Lucas coil electronic dizzy and alternator. It started and ran on several occasions. When I finally took it for a test drive it went 20 yards then cut out. There was no spark . I put in a new ignition module and tested dizzy and coil on the bench and correct resistance and I was getting a spark. When I put it all back in the car no spark again. So took it all off and bench tested again. No spark so I feel like I’ve fried the module again. I’ve double checked the wiring and all seems correct but one thing confuses me. The small wires coming out of the alternator go into a black and white wire which I’ve put on the negative side of the coil. This wire (tachometer?)is permanently live , should it be? I do have the old dizzy so guess I should try this as the modules are 28 quid each.
I don’t understand how it was running fine then just stopped.
Thanks
Neil

The ignition modules need a 12v feed, make sure it's not a ballast ignition cable. The wires from the dizzy should go to the positive and negative side of the coil

Also the modules are heat sensitive, the can fail if they don't have heatsink past between them and the dizzy, I've had them where they go down on a hot engine then start working when cool, removing the grille got me home on a hot day.

If you've swapped a points dizzy for a 65dm4 electronic one did you also swap the coil to a GCL143, or equivalent?

Thanks for the responses . I did get a new coil with the new dizzy. Not sure on the ballast wire. It does feed 12v but will run another 12v feed to replace it and report back .

So I fed in another power supply and I have got spark. The wiring loom feed has a yellow/white wire and a pink wire not sure if the pink wire is a ballast wire. Anyway without them on it works. Thanks all
