When - NOW! One of the front trumpets have sheared after meeting a pothole.

 

That leaves the how and the what.

 

What: I have bought new rubbers, et set of genuine HiLo's, new adjustable Gaz dampers and bottom arm bushes.

 

 

That leaves the how..

 

How to attack it? I suspect the front left trumpet to come out in pieces. The right front might not need that much work since the rubbers are probably completely flat. But what do I need to know? I have bought a compressor for the cones. (I have changes many springs, dampers, wishbones etc. on normal suspension cars, so know my way around spanners..)

The fact you have the cone compressor saves a world of hurt.

 

The rear is easy, but you will need to drop the shock absorbers so removing the fuel tank is the only pain.

 

The fronts are straight forward with the compressor, do make sure the nylon cups are in good order though. If in doubt replace. You will need to remove the top arm so a ball joint splitter will be required.

What I do is get the front in the air
Wheels off
Remove drive shaft nut split pins, loosen the nuts(Just in case you need the top arm off to get the cone out).

Split top ball joint taper from the top arm. Keep the nut on a couple turns so the hub doesn't crush your fingers.

Remove Shock Absorbers

Then there is two small bolts and a large nut on the Front of the top arm pin and a nut on the rear.

You might need the radiator out. If this is the case it's a single bolt on the bottom of the cowling then two bolts at the top of the cowling. (You may need the bracket off the thermostat housing to get the radiator out. Take care of the fan, the plastic ones will break if forced too much)

The bottom hose is MUCH easier to remove if you take it off at the water pump end (you'll need to remove the heater matrix pipe too)

There is a knuckle that sits in a nylon cup on the front arms and radius arms. If this fails then the suspension appears to be collapsed.

... Crap did not order those. :/ Since the trumpet is crushed I expect they need replacing as well.

You maybe lucky, the ones on my 74 Clubby were original were in one piece. I did however replace them as a matter of course.

one other point to note is that the existing rubber cones may have either imperial or metric thread - make sure you use the adaptor with the correct thread when using the cone compressor.

AHH yes. My mini is a 77, so I suspect it to be metric

Spare cups were included with my recently purchased Hi-Lo’s ... it’s worth considering buying new knuckle joints as well though if you’re replacing the rubbers and fitting Hi-Lo’s, they’re only a few £ each.
