I have a Smith's rev counter I fitted years ago, it seems very accurate when stationary and setting the tick over, but at high speed it goes crazy, the needle flys back and forwards. I have recently replaced the distributor, any ideas why it might do this?

No, all electronic, brand new from H & H, running like a dream now!

so you have changed from points to electronic ignition and you are now having this problem?

no it was always electronic, I went from a 25 year old Rover Metro one (the one with the black box of tricks on the outside) to a Powerspark one, that H & H have worked their magic with. It did it in the past, but maybe my new engine with updated cam has made it worse?

Have you checked the Ignition module on the side of the distributor, this happened on mine til I replaced it.

there isn't a module, it is all internal.

all tight as far as I can see. I will recheck. The coil is brand new Gold high performance one from Mini Spares.
Are the coil connections clean and tight? Sounds like the coil might be old?

It wouldn't be a Lucas 'Sport' coil part number DLB105 or 198 Would it? I've got previous experience with two of these coils failing pretty much out of the box from minispares.
I now use Intermotor for coils and Distributor parts as they are better quality and easy for me to get locally. Try another coil from a known working car, or get a new one from another supplier then send the minispares sourced one back.

It is this coil.

I think the coil is fine, it sparks fine, runs fine!
