K&n - Cone Or Round For Hif44?

Best Answer luismx123 , 20 March 2019 - 02:49 PM

Hey Inno,

As far as i know, most people refer to this article by CalverST https://www.calverst...air-filtration/

He has some really good information as to what how why which one if better/worse than the other. Take a look, grab a coffee and read up on it.
I think many people would go for the stock housing with drilled holes+ aftermarket filter to fit as it gives more power and more torque. If youre someone like myself, you'll go with the one that looks best and doesnt hurt performance. I like the way the cone filters look and sound, theyre better than stock so its a win/win for me. If i had a 1275 or higher and was after squeezing out power where I could, then Id get myself what Calver advises, swap the head, get a new cam, remove the interior of my car, get carbon goodies and stop going to the gym to drop some excess weight ;)
Hope I could help

Hi...you are 100% right....

I read probably all Calver's articles and reading them again....great staff. I read that one about no gain in performance with cone K&N but when I started this thread I didn't have any original filter so between searching and buying original filter, doing modification and buying related K&N element I decided to buy cone - looks better, sounds better (weekend car anyhow) and similar performance - easy decision.

My original question was cone K&N or round one since I saw both are available - nothing else.

But as always new interesting things were mentioned and now instead of simple choice between cone and round I started to think about MED stub stuck where complete set is cheaper than just cone K&N and they say performance is outstanding and they do something around Mini market - and in 20 or 30 years it may be possible somebody comes with something better - so new dilemma.

In addition just one hour ago, a friend of mine just gave me original air filter housing so now I have it - but still would like to use something that looks better....

Yea I kind of misread your post there :/

I guess go MED if youre after performance. It is probably by far the best one out there. I myself got a stubstack for under the cone thats supposed to give 5% more flow over stock. That is probably why the MED filter works so well...
And lets behonest, how much have you invested in your mini... and is it worth to sacrifice something for a few bucks?

I planned to buy Cone K&N since I do not have original housing for HIF44, but I noticed that round filters are cheaper.

http://www.minispare...px|Back to shop

.....this one is  2.5inch deep while the cone one is 2" - may be this one has more air space below and gives less restrictive flow....? Is there any clearance concern with minispares inlet manifold, standard spacers and HIF44

this one is thinner but doesn't say how much AND IT GOES WITH CENTRAL AND OFFSET holes (any clue what is difference?):

http://www.minispare...px|Back to shop

Visual I do not care they both look ok.

I would like to ask your opinion on functionality and maximum flow for 1330 engine with up to 95HP (and of course clearance).

What about installing stub stuck below cone or round K&N filter??

With those prices your into the realms of being near the MED ITG stubstack kit, which made a difference compared to the K&N i've ran before.

you need the offset hole to clear the bulkhead. but the KN kits cause issues with the flat face reflecting sound waves into the carb. not to mention the noise increase.

I think they have ITG  stubstuck for hif44:

https://www.med-engi...ub-stack-system

it is cheaper than K&N and looks cool and I wouldn't mind buying it but I only found data that k&n is much better..

....Med claims they gain 4 HP with this setup over the cone filter but they do not say what cone filter they used...

thanks..off set is more expensive than center....so cone would be better choice than flat face round one....?

I actually already placed an order from MED that includes their stubstuck that I planned to put under K&N cone.....stubstack will be used in any combination......onlu question is what to put around stubstuck: -

  • K&N cone,
  • K&N round or
  • MED ITG filter type - looks super cool also

I still have time to delay MED order and to add their ITG filter.....

not a matter of few bucks here - really would like to have optimum air flow that is all

For 100%optimum flow you d need a trumpet and a very very big filter box. All possible, just depends how far one wants to go :)

....all the way to the handbrake :D :D ...

....following many available tests substack improves flow almost as a trumpet and MED ITG kits includes stubstack flow tested with ITG filter and has the most unrestricted flow so I guess I will take MED ITG....and it looks cool ;D
