I'm sure someone has the answer here:

Just received my heritage certificate and whilst my car was purchased in March 79 it was actually built on 17th January 1978. Does this mean I am exempt from MOT and Tax from now on?

I intend having the car checked every year but life will be so much easier if I have this flexibility.

Thanks

J

Either way it's now officially forty years old so yes tax and MOT exempt. You will still need to go on line to declare it though once you current MOT and tax are due.

If the vehicle in question is now over 40 years old and hence is eligible for the historic tax class, you will now need to change from PLG to the historic tax class.

I'm unsure if you can do this over the phone to the DVLA however you can do this at your local post office that taxes vehicles.

Re the exemption from MOT, there are terms about modifications. Have a quick read up.

As I understand it if it has a registration of 79 but a build date of 78 then from April this year you can send the DVLA your V5C showing "Change of tax class" to Vehicle of Historic Interest together with a copy of my Heritage Certificate showing the build date as Jan 1978. The DVLA will then amend the tax class to VHI and return a new V5C. As in posts above you could also do this at a local Post Office that deals in car VED, although some Post Offices are more knowledgeable than others regarding the correct procedures.

Do the same rules apply if the car was previously SORNed, i.e. no MoT or tax?

What sort of info do you get on a heritage cert from the 70s?

I have them for my mk1s but not for my mk3 as I was told the info is very vague. It was an era of very early computer records which weren’t particularly reliable.

If the vehicle is already down as a historic vehicle, when you come to tax it online (using the document reference number printed on the current v5c) it'll ask you regarding the MOT. If the vehicle has been modified since 1985 (iirc) you would not be eligible for exemption of MOT.

If it is eligible, you just tick the box (so long as you have insurance) and the vehicle will be taxed.

If it is still as a PLG and registered SORN, you'll have to go to the post office and they will be able to tax it whilst changing from PLG to historic.

I had to do this recently on one of mine.

I emailed them a while back. This was the response I got:

"We have the build records for these vehicles but the information recorded for the Mark III Mini's is not enough to warrant paying £42.00 for a certificate unless you need the information to register the vehicle.

The only information we have is the make and model, chassis number and date of build.
Sometimes the engine number or colour is recorded but not in all the computer print outs we hold."

I was asked to forward onto them my chassis number and prefix so that they could double check however the response below backed up the initial email I got...

"The information recorded for these vehicles is the date of build and despatch, the engine number and original destination, we can confirm the make and model of the vehicle but no other information is available."

That’s kind of what I thought. Thanks for clarifying.

Still useful if you need a build date.
