I have a 1987 Austin mini advantage with 110,000 miles and 15 previous owners. I bought it about a week and a half ago unseen. I took it for a test drive and all seemed fine. On the 4 hour journey home home there wasn’t really a problem apart from slight knocking.

The knocking sound started to appear 30 mins into driving now it appears after 5 mins of driving.

I had a similar sound with another mini I had which turned out to be big end bearings and low oil pressure. I’m worried that I have the same issue.

I don’t have an oil pressure gauge so I can only really diagnose it by listening. The knocking increases with higher revs. And the sound goes away when under load, for example letting the engine struggle at 30 mph in 4th gear. The sound is slowly getti worse, and I need some advice. How long can the car last with this issue?

Your description is consistent with Big End noise, though it could be a few things.

I'll suggest checking the Valve Train first, though this normally appears as a Tapping rather than a Knock.

If it's not in the Valve Train, then regardless, it will be an engine out and engine strip to completely diagnose and repair.

Use EP90 gearbox oil and wear ear plugs.
