That ripped line thing on your last pic in the first post is most likely to be the vacuum line for the idle actuator when you turn on the Air Conditioner. Seeing that your car has no AC (at least, not anymore) it's possible somebody has taken the idle control unit out and leave the vacuum actuator on the car.

 

Thank you so much for mentioning that - since the factory AC was disconnected and removed, that thought didn't even cross my mind. I'd say you're correct, I'll make a point to just plug the open port.

Fresh distributor and new problems - suspecting a distributor drive failure? Have ensured the new distributor is seated properly and all the way in, and engaging with the distributor drive, started intermittently clacking on turnover and now does so constantly. Removed the distributor again, checked the position of the drive gear, reinstalled the distributor, checked the rotor to make sure it's engaged fully, and still a notchy and noisy clack-clack-clack as it spins. Removed the distributor again and, as a last resort, confirmed that noise continues with the distributor as well. Did a web search and couldn't find any similar issue discussed.
