Is there a special technique to fitting a new bonnet locking pin?

 

I know there is a slot at the bottom, but its very wide and difficult to get a screwdriver to fit snugly into it, hence making it difficult to tighten it up.

 

I've also tried using a pair of pliers, but I am worried this will bend the pin.

i just used the biggest screwdriver i have. may be try a coin if you dont have a suitable screwdriver.
