When replacing the fuel line that goes from the tank to the pump, is it necessary to replicate the flares used on the original fuel line?

Not really - It just helps with the sealing. 

 

One thing to remember is the flexible pipe the hard line connects to will have possibly swollen a bit and dried up a tad. In this case if you are using the correct sized hard line (replacement) - it may feel a bit loose, so best to replace the rubber piping too

 

Just a case of not mixing old with new. Best to use new clips too if they are as old as the line.Just a safety thing really, you don,t want fuel leaks

Cannot speak for everyone else but the original factory steel fuel lines on my 1982, 998 didn't have any flares at any of the fuel line joints. I think the key is to match the correct size tube (1/4"O/D x 22swg) to the correct size rubber hose (1/4" I/D) at any of the joints using the correct size clips think 11-13mm are the ones you want though I stand to be corrected on that. You don't state which model you have, I think, though not certain the injected cars may have had larger lines.

I have a 1275, 1994 mayfair . I'm replacing both the hard line and rubber pipe with new stuff, which is the same size as what came on the car. If it's not necessary I won't use any flares as the new rubber pipe fits snugly over the hard line anyway.
