I need to replace the front wheel cylinders on my twin leading system.

I have new cylinders, but no new Gaskets.  Gaskets are two weeks away.
What is the purpose of the gasket, and can I go ahead and fit without them? ( no old ones on their either )

I don't fit the gaskets, i just smear the back of the wheel cylinders(keep the plastic caps on the nipple and pipe threads) with copper grease, also smear the pistons where the shoes sit
