I got the same one as James. From Minispares, its fairly lightweight, so i like the idea of some dynamat under it.

However, i've not managed to fit it.

It'll be a right pain to do with the engine in and everything attached to the bulkhead?

Thread resurrection, has anyone fitted the Smithy's Bits bulkhead insulation, especially to a carb model?

I took mine off the bulkhead on the engine side. It had deteriortaed and was a big oil/water trap. On the cabin side I removed the factory sponge/rubber pieces and replaced it with this stuff https://noico.info/p...und-insulation/

It blocks more sound than the factory sponge/rubber one. I also lined the bonnet with the same stuff and it cut down a lot of the noise.

See, now that makes much more sense! I think a much better idea to apply something to the inside of the car (out of the elements) that is designed to do more then just "look the part" and actually knock out the heat and noise.

I currently has the engine bay nearly empty and this thread popping up is of perfect timing. I started thinking of added the foam pad (a newer version of course) to the engine side as its the ideal time. I know its original and all but thinking about it, its a very strange idea and is not all that attractive. Not even sure it is doing anything in the way of heat/noise reduction. Now, some proper science-backed product, applied to the inside bulkhead, now THAT could be a good idea.

Hi Brivinci,

I've got the Smithy's Bits foam ready to go in. My noise crusade has gotten a bit out of hand. I have a 5 speed on the way so motor will come out and the foam will go in then. The 5 speed will drop revs and noise down at cruising speed. But wait there's more. I got a perfect Burr Walnut dash of ebay so some sound deadening will go in when that is out. Despite popular opinion i'm going to replace the engine driven fan with an electric one to further drop noise. There is method in my madness. I have also got the Davies Craig electric water pump and electronic controller. The controller has a fan icon which lights up when the fan kicks in so I will be able to get some data on when and where the fan is needed. I have an SPI which has the back up fan which will run via it's separate radiator sensor. I live in Australia so I'll be a bit of a crash test dummy for the fan/ pump set up. I've cut out some sound deadener for under the bonnet. My car is at 93 dBa at the moment which is was too loud. I'll take another reading when I'm done.

I did buy the Smithy's bits one, it only needed a small mod to fit my 1990 Cooper, it's grey and not black, and it's not as dense quality foam as I would have liked, as during installation I found if I pressed too hard it would damage it. All in all, for £25 inc delivery it is good value and looking around the only one I could find for my car.

I wonder if these are more for the look or if they will actually do anything. If you are covering the bulkhead with one, maybe it would be best to apply some proper insulation/deader under it to actually do something. The original could not have done more then collect water.

Can you post some pics? I'm interested in doing this.
