Good evening All,

I have to replace my pot joint boots as they're perished (at 2 years old!), I've got hold of some genuine ones with the correct metal clips and have the correct tool for pulling these clips up tight.

My Mini is all nicely painted underneath including the driveshafts, so if I can get away with it I'd rather not have to whack the offset sphere joint off of the end of the driveshaft and risk damaging the paint!

If I remove the driveshafts after removing the pot joint clips, then remove the offset sphere cage and balls, would I be able to get away with gently warming the boots in some hot water then slipping them over the "spider"?

Thanks in advance, Steve.

what i did was remove the clip and then undo the top and bottom ball joints and steering arm and remove the whole disc and shaft from the car then using an adjustable spanner at the pop joint end and the shaft in a vice whack the adjustable spanner and the spider cage should just pop off

Sometimes these spiders will just not come off, even when using a BFH :goaway:

Personally - I have had better luck removing the outer CV - and sliding the boot down to the inner joint. Making sure the journey to the inner pot has a clean delivery and not dragging any crud in !

Ok thanks for that info. Driveshafts are nice and clean so that may be the way to go!

Cheers, Steve

Trying to get a boot over the ball and cage would probably see you rip the boot.

And as for getting the cage off - my success rate was low,  even though it is covered in grease, they are a swine

Yes, I’ve had little success years back in removing the spider off the end of the driveshaft! I’ll take your advice and slip it on from the outer end once I’ve clobbered the cv joint off the end of of the drive shaft.

I take it it’s ok to leave the hub and drive flange intact and just remove the whole lot including the cv joint from the outer end of the driveshaft?

Thanks for your help with this one!

Cheers, Steve.

Yes, should be fine - be sure you have sufficient room to get the shaft out and back in
