This will probably be long, so apologies in advance.

Ok, so in short I currently have a 2011 Macbook Air and a 2012 Pro. The AIr is as it left Apple but the SSD is running very slow. I know that despite having a SATA 3 connection, the proprietary SSD is only SATA 2. the Pro has a Crucial MX500 500GB SSD however it is running like a pig (I think the SSD cable is nearly dead) and will take another SSD in the optical bay. The Air has 4GB DDR3 RAM (1333 Mhz, soldered to the board) and the Pro has 16GB DDR3 (1600Mhz). The Air's resolution is 1440 x 900 vs the 1280 x 800 on the Pro. The other major difference is the USB2.0 on the Air (including SD card reader) vs the USB 3on the Pro. I can't decide which of them to keep. I have had the AIr since new, the Pro just 2/3 months (I bid on it on ebay when I was trying to get the wife a laptop, forgot about it, and won it for a price I thought would get beat - I didn't actually intend to buy it in all honesty!) If I keep the Air, I am going to try and put an M2 SSD with relevant adaptor in (the Transcend and OWC purpose built SSDs are ridiculously expensive). If I keep the Pro, in time I'll put another SSD in there as well. I'd like to dual boot Windows 10 as well. My current computing uses are fairly moderate, but I would like to learn programming and a couple of other bits (website design, maybe photoshop although thats less likely) as well.

I'm tempted to get a PS4 as well, but I know the PS5 is out next year (hopefully!) An Xbox One isn't out of the question (mainly for Forza Horizon 4 - it looks awesome, but my brother and a mate both have a PS4 and would be more likely to get a PS5 than switch platform). The other option is sell the PS3 and both laptops, and spend a modest amount on a basic machine that can be used for gaming. I don't need a hardcore gaming set up, and I don't mind a self build. But I only have a TV, with a 2ms delay (apparently) and no monitor. I'd probably need a monitor in that set up for when I actually need to use the PC but my wife does have a Windows 10 laptop I could use for basic stuff. The only other problem is my duaghter watches Mickey Mouse DVDs and the PS3 is ideal for this at the moment (wife obviously sets it up for her) rather than having to use PC, so I'd need a separet little thing for that as well.

Thoughts? I haven't bought any new tech for a long time, and it's time for a refresh! I don't have a huge budget right now though, so if I bought / bullt a PC it would be fairly cheap but with an option for upgrading in the future. I'm open to other suggestions as well. I'm more attached to the Air - it has served me well, including surviving Afghanistan sand and a water spill from my daughter, for nearly 8 years virtually problem free - but I know the Pro is more powerful.

I know there is a risk of a PC v console gaming war starting, but that's not the intent here!

If you buy a PS5 you'll need a new telly, unless you've got a decent 4K set already?

Sure the console will run at a lower resolution on an older TV, but then you might as well use a PS4 if you're gunna do that.

That's a good point, and one I had admittedly overlooked. My current TV is not 4K, but I got it back in 2011 (funnily enough, when I got all my stuff) and so it has lasted pretty well. I would look to upgrade that at some point as well if I went the PS5 route, because as you say there is no point not doing so.

That pushes your budget easily into the £1000-£1500 region if not more.

Granted that gets you a new telly, but to be honest unless you're into watching 4K films you won't notice much difference with normal live TV.
