ok i think i have 2 issues both I think unrelated

1

I need to replace both front lower arms as I keep getting a clunking sound whenever I move or decrease my speed

Both wheels move around a bit on when jacked up

Would you agree?

2

I don't feel its linked to number 1 but feel free to disagree!

This really concerns me

When costing around 30mph if you take your feet of the pedals there is a loud clattering sound almost if something is loose?

The sound comes from the footwell area

If you were then to touch the brake and accelerator pedal slightly there is a noise as if they are "scraping"?

The noise is getting louder

I cannot see anything lose in the footwell or under the dash

I am sure nothing has come adrift body panel wise either as it was rebuilt a few years ago

Any thoughts on problem 2?

Cheers

Lenny

1, Check balljoints for play and check to see if steering rack U bolts are tight.

2, If its a rubber mounted subframe check the mounts in the footwell for separation of the rubber.

No 1 may be the bottom arms but also could be ball joints and/or wheel bearings.

No 2 check your front and rear front subframe mounts and your top and bottom engine steadies

Whilst you are checking all the above check the constant velocity joints and pot joints.

Make sure the toeboard itself is not cracked around the rear mounts.Seen that before.

I had a similar issue with a mkI mini that had the rubber crucifix drive shaft / transmission joints.
The rubber tops used to bump against the floor of the 1310cc mini (I think) and it drove me MAD !
Possibly because of worn engine mounts .
Never did get to the bottom of it as I blew the engine up revving it way high in frustration
Broken crank took out the block and the gearbox.
Ahhhh the 70's.

What about tie bar rubbers?

I think all these guys are saying the same thing, you need to get the car up in the air and have a good look see till you find what's loose.

Clattering suggests a more continuous sound to me. Anything related to suspension/subframe mountings I'd expect to be a single or intermittent clunk as the reaction forces take up the slack. If my interpretation is correct get both wheels in the air and look if anything could be contacting with a driveshaft or pot joint. Also rotate the wheels, from full lock to full lock, feeling for any slack in he drive train.

Reckon I have found the problem
The plate in the footwell which has the sub frame bolts looks like it's a little rusty with a small crack showing
Reckon its flexing as I brake etc.
I guess i will need to take it off and replace and weld it
Is this likely to be a big job?

Hopefully, it won't be too big if you can find a helpful repair garage, but having said that, is this the only damage ?

Try to reinforce it with oversized strengthening plates

Take the plate off, assess how much damage there is and go from there. Don't just slap a patch over it, do it properly.
