Finally got car going but idle speed is 1500 rpm. Another post here in action trying to pinpoint why.

New head gasket just fitted using a Payen MPI kit from from minispares   However when the temp guage gets to halfway the expansion tank seems to expand  is this right.  When I remove the cap the coolant bubbles quite severely.  Is this right?

The idea of the expansion tank is to allow the hot coolant to expand and build up pressure which will increase the temperature at which it boils. Removing the cap reduces the pressure and boiling temperature . Normal running temp on MPi is around 100 deg C.

high idles are often air leaks in and around the throttle body/inlet manifold

the main suspect is the IACV, has you checked/cleaned this?

According to the Rover MPi manual engine spec/ cooling system

Cooling fan operation

On..............105 deg C

OFF..............98 deg C

I have had reason to check this with an infra red thermostat to calibrate an alternative'  temp gauge and it is correct
