What size feeler gauge should I be able to get under the main and big end bearing caps when checking bearing crush on a 998?

Thanks for replying.  I've read elsewhere that I need 4 to 5 thou so I thought I'd ask here.  I have 7 thou on the big ends but only 3 thou on the mains so was concerned that I may need some align-honing work doing as the last thing I need is a spun bearing.  If you're right about 3 thou that's great.

0.007" at the top end and 0.003" at the very bottom end - even at that, I'm be doing a few 'hail merrys'.

You'll get a more accurate result using a DTI rather than a feeler gauge.

If you are chasing that last 0.0005", you can give the cap and sump rails a rub on an oil stone, just to polish them, don't go ape.

Are you saying 0.003" is the lower limit?

How do you position the DTI gauge?

Yes, 0.003" is the lower limit.

You can usually find a a point on the spot facing of the cap to get the finger in. I find the small (true) DTI is better for this than a Dial Gauge as it can be set to right angles (or just about any angle) to the workpiece.

One like this ;-  https://www.msi-viki...mm_p_22277.html

ideally, you want it on the centre line of the bolt, but there's not usually enough space there when a socket is also landed over the bolt head so as close as you can get to that.
