How Do I Get These Confounded Gears Off?!

Best Answer alex-95 , 25 April 2019 - 06:30 PM

Have you pushed the pins in and tried aligning it both ways? I had the same problem the other night and moved it the opposite way and managed to get it off.

I hold the gear and tap the shaft down with a soft faced mallet, don't know if that's the correct way of doing it but worked for me and didn't damage anything. If it doesn't go then it might need turning a bit more.

I'm doing a full gearbox rebuild and trying to get these last 2 gears off - the ones with the spring pin holding the washers in place.

I've pressed in the pin and rotated the washers, but on the one with 2 pins, i can't seem to properly align the notches no matter what. theres always a little bit that extends below the shaft's teeth:

For the other side i've aligned the notches to the teeth but still cant seem to lift out the washer.

How do i lift out these washers? I've tried sticking 2 tiny flathead screwdrivers in there but as the washers are too thick i can't lift them out.

Used to have a guide for taking apart and putting back together gearboxes... Can't seem to find it, moved house twice since...
Look on the 'u-tub' chanel, minimania makes a good gearbox rebuild series. Its basically the same backwards.

It can be very frustrating, just persist and you will eventually get it right. If the bearing feel ok then it might not be necessary to remove these gears unless they are damaged.

I had the same problem last week and moved the locking ring the opposite way and up it popped.

They can be fiddly to remove, be patient, eventually everything will align and they'll come off.

They are a fairly 'neat' fit, you just need to persist.

I wish i thought of this myself! I could have saved an hour or 2 of fiddling about!

A gentle few taps with a rubber mallet and both gears came right out.
